We recently had the good fortune to attend the Clean Gulf Conference in San Antonio, TX, where we were pleased to find that interest remains high in the Competition and its participants. While attending Clean Gulf, X PRIZE was joined on the exhibit floor by our $1 Million the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE winner Elastec/American Marine (complete with the “big check”) as well as fellow competitors LAMOR, Voraxial, CRUCIAL, and visiting competitors Koseq.

The teams have tested.  The data has been collected.  The results are in and the winners of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE are . . .

OilWhale completed their Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE official team testing on September 29th, just twelve short days prior to the Award Ceremony in New York.  While a dozen days may not seem like a long time to some, to others it is a slow lifetime.  Teams who have worked so diligently to create technology that can rapidly and efficiently clean up surface oil spills are anxiously awaiting the results but looking back, have already come away from the Competition with successes.

While most teams had already completed their testing at Ohmsett, Lamor was just beginning their time on the ground with the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE.  A time that they waited patiently for and when their turn was upon them, they were not disappointed.

“Our testing and official test runs have run extremely smoothly with no flaws," Jari Ahoranta, team representative said.

We said it before and we’ll say it again, this Competition is about more than winning $1M.  It is about the excitement of the Competition, the thrill of the testing and the ability to be a part of something never before accomplished.  For some teams, the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE was about testing at a facility where they otherwise wouldn’t have been able to test, allowing them the opportunity to see their system in action and obtain data which can help them market their technology.  For those teams who are new

At X PRIZE we like to think of ourselves as one big family – especially when you are on the ground, in the trenches with an active X CHALLENGE. When you see the competing teams day after day, working so hard to achieve their dreams of creating a new and inventive way or improved way of cleaning up surface oil spills, you get attached to them. You root for them – all of them. These people, these strangers, they become your family. Oh sure you all have rules you have to follow (don’t we all) and yes, you all have your obvious heated debates, but in the end, when all is said and done – you have created an extended family with the same goals. Where else can you experience this sort of team spirit?

One might ask, now that the Competition has come to a close, what does a team do after the excitement passes?  Do they look back on their performance and feel accomplished?  Have they effectively achieved their individual goals?  Do they go back to the drawing board to improve upon their systems?  Are they ready for what comes next?  All fair questions and yet, the answers for some teams may be as uncertain as who will win on October 11th.

What does a team do once they have left the heart of the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE?  What does one do to occupy their time now that creating, building, and testing is complete?  Team CRUCIAL returned home from the Wendy Schmidt Oil Cleanup X CHALLENGE testing at Ohmsett still excited about the experience, ready to dive into new adventures.

When an oil spill occurs there is very little time for preparation, there is only time for reactive measures utilizing the best possible equipment and knowledge you have to date.  You hope that it is the best solution possible, you trust that you have done all the necessary homework required to safely and effectively recover the oil from the water’s surface and you believe that the responses will be swift.  However, in a Competition, all bets are off and while the playing field (or in this case a water and oil filled tank) has been equalized as much as one ca
